Garage Door Services in Chicago and the Suburbs

John Garage Door Repair handles the full range of garage door work across Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, from a single broken spring to a complete replacement door. This page sets out every service we offer, what each one involves, and how a call actually runs from the phone to the finished repair.

We are a mobile operation, so all of this happens at your address. Call (872) 312-8838 to describe the problem and we will tell you which service it falls under and when a technician can be there.

Repair services

Spring replacement

The most common call we take. A broken spring leaves the door far too heavy to lift and is the one repair that should never be improvised, because the springs hold the energy that balances the entire door. We size the replacement to your door weight rather than fitting whatever is nearest. More on spring replacement.

Cable repair

Lift cables run from the bottom brackets to the drums or pulleys. When one frays or jumps its drum the door hangs crooked, binds in the track and can drop unevenly. We replace cables as a pair and reset the drums so both sides lift together. More on cable repair.

Opener repair and installation

Covers motors that hum without moving, travel and force limits that have drifted, worn trolleys and rails, misaligned safety sensors, and full replacement units including wall mount models for garages with no ceiling clearance. More on opener repair.

Remote, keypad and clicker programming

Remotes that stopped working after a battery change, exterior keypads, in car buttons and replacement handsets for openers whose original remote is long gone. Where a remote cannot be paired we identify a compatible or universal replacement. More on remotes and keypads.

Off track correction

A door out of its track is usually the visible result of a failed roller, a bent track or a broken cable. Forcing it back without finding the cause simply repeats the failure, so we correct the alignment and replace whatever caused it. More on off track repair.

Hardware, sealing and panel work

Replacement of rollers, hinges, brackets and track sections, bottom and perimeter weather seal and vinyl stop moulding, and individual damaged panels. These are the smaller jobs that quietly determine how quietly and how long the rest of the door lasts. See the full parts list.

Installation

New garage door installation

When the sections themselves are past saving, we measure the opening, walk you through material and insulation options, and fit the new door with matched springs and hardware rather than reusing worn parts. More on new door installation.

Emergency service

A door stuck open leaves the property exposed and a door jammed shut can trap a vehicle. Those calls are treated as urgent rather than slotted into the next free day. More on emergency repair.

How a service call works

  1. You call and describe the symptom. A photo or short video of the failure helps considerably.
  2. We match the likely part and confirm an arrival window for your address.
  3. The technician tests the door balance, hardware and opener before quoting, so the diagnosis is based on the door rather than a guess over the phone.
  4. You approve the work. The repair is completed and the door is cycled and rebalanced before the technician leaves.

Where we work and what it costs

We cover Chicago and more than fifty surrounding suburbs; the full list is on our service area page. For what different repairs involve, see the pricing page. If you would rather try a fix yourself first, our DIY repair guide is straightforward about which jobs are safe to attempt and which carry real risk.

Frequently asked questions about our services

What garage door services do you offer?

Spring replacement, cable repair, opener repair and installation, remote and keypad programming, off track correction, roller, hinge and track hardware work, weather seal replacement, panel replacement and complete new door installation. Emergency call outs are available for doors stuck open or jammed shut.

Do you work on both the door and the opener?

Yes. They are two separate systems that fail in different ways, and a technician who only handles one tends to misdiagnose the other. We service the door hardware, the spring and cable system, and the opener including its rail, sensors and remotes.

How long does a typical service call take?

Most single repairs, such as a spring set, a cable, a roller set or a sensor alignment, are finished within one visit. Larger work like a full door installation is scheduled as a longer appointment. We tell you the expected duration when you book rather than leaving you waiting.

Can you service a door if you did not install it?

Yes. The large majority of our work is on doors installed by someone else, often years earlier. Standard hardware is broadly interchangeable across manufacturers, and where a proprietary part is involved we identify it before ordering.

Do you handle commercial as well as residential doors?

We handle residential doors and light commercial units such as small shop and warehouse doors. Tell us the door type and rough dimensions when you call so the technician arrives with parts that fit.

What happens if the part my door needs is not on the truck?

Our vans carry the common failure parts, so most jobs finish the same visit. If your door needs something less common, such as a discontinued panel or a specific opener board, we identify it on the first visit and tell you what has to be ordered and roughly how long it takes.

Is it worth repairing an older door or should it be replaced?

It depends on the sections rather than the hardware. Springs, cables, rollers and openers are all routine replacements on a door of any age. Replacement becomes the sensible option when the sections themselves are rotted, rusted through or structurally bent, because that is the part that cannot be economically rebuilt.

How do I book a service call?

Call (872) 312-8838 and describe the symptom, or use the online booking form. Useful details are whether the door is stuck open or closed, the rough age of the door and opener, and any brand name on the motor unit.
